Funky Brasil

Funky Brasil - Funk, Soul rare grooves

An hour long mix with a fine package of vintage Brazilian funk, soul and rare grooves.

Rare Groove highlights:

Farofa Carioca, ‘Moro no Brasil’

Formed in 1995 by Seu Jorge, Bertrand Doussain, and Gabriel Moura, Farofa Carioca evidenced the disposition of mixing several national (samba, axé music, choro, xote) and transnational genres (hip-hop, reggae).
The band recorded their first album, Moro no Brasil, in 1998. Always dealing with the serious social problems of Brazilian megalopolises, like police violence and drug trafficking, the group enjoyed immediate identification with the masses. Excellent vocals, great horns, and groovy rhythms…

Cassiano, ‘Onda’

A true Brazilian soul gem Cassiano ‘Cuban Soul: 18 Kilates’, was released in 1976.

The album is full of Tim Maia’s arrangements beautifully complemented by Cassiano’s soulful vocal tone.

However, it’s all about the incredible song Onda, a by the beach anthem. Complete with albatros squawks and wave sounds this incredible opus to relaxation is the perfect blend of a driving bassline and subtle percussions, all driven by a disco sound almost submerged in beach water and sunshine.

Zé Roberto, ‘Lotus 72D’

The song Lotus 72 D, a certified Holy Grail of Brazilian music is a tribute to F1 driver Emerson Fittipaldi, world champion in 1972. The single features two versions of the track, one of them is the pitched up version that originally appeared on the outstanding 2001 Via Brazil compilation.

Even though many people are more familiar with the “fast” version, Zé Roberto states that he was unaware of this version ever officially existing.

Emilio Santiago, ‘Bananeira’

A great funky cover of Gilberto Gil & João Donato’s track.

Classic breakbeat drums and funky electric piano, getting our feet off the ground.
Great horn arrangements with trumpets, saxophones, a trombone, and even a flute.
